As I was explaining this to my boyfriend over dinner yesterday, the reason I would give The Cuckoo's Calling five stars is not just because of J.K. Rowling's impeccable writing (Robert Galbraith is her pseudonym) but because of one very specific reason: she understands dialogue like no one else. Especially dialogue over food or drinks. In so many books the characters go to a restaurant, order an elaborate dish and then exchange barely two sentences before it has apparently been eaten in an unrealistically short time. Same goes for movies where the characters order coffee and are never shown drinking it. That irks me to no end and I really appreciated the attention to detail in The Cuckoo's Calling. And, of course, it is also a very well crafted murder mystery.
